Ingredients
- 3 cups all-purpose flour
- 3 cups granulated sugar
- 1 ½ cups unsweetened cocoa powder
- 4 large eggs
- 1 ½ cups buttermilk
- 1 cup vegetable oil
- 1 ½ cups powdered sugar (for frosting)
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour two 9-inch round baking pans.
- In one bowl, whisk together flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking soda, baking powder, and salt.
- In another bowl, mix eggs, buttermilk, warm water (or coffee), oil, and vanilla until smooth.
- Gradually combine wet ingredients with dry ingredients; mix until just combined.
- Pour batter evenly into prepared pans and bake for 30-35 minutes or until a toothpick comes out clean.
- Cool cakes in pans for about 10 minutes before transferring to a cooling rack.
- Prepare frosting by beating butter and cream cheese; gradually add cocoa powder and powdered sugar until smooth. Frost cooled cake layers as desired.

- Optional: add chocolate chips or drizzle chocolate ganache over the top.
