Ingredients
Scale
- 4 cups all-purpose flour, plus extra as needed
- 1 ½ tsp baking soda
- 1 tsp salt
- 2 tbsp chopped fresh chives
- 1 tbsp each chopped fresh thyme, rosemary, and sage
- 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese
- 1 ¾ cups buttermilk
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 425°F.
- In a mixing bowl, combine flour, baking soda, and salt. Stir together.
- Add chopped herbs and shredded cheddar.
- Add buttermilk and stir until combined.
- Turn dough onto lightly floured counter. Knead lightly a couple of times to form a smooth ball. Shape into a 7-inch circle.
- Lightly flour a baking sheet. Transfer dough to sheet and dust top with more flour. Score a cross about 1/2 inch deep.
- Bake 15 minutes at 425°F, then reduce heat to 375°F and bake another 30–35 minutes until fully baked (bread sounds hollow when tapped on bottom).
- Wrap in a tea towel to cool, letting steam soften the crust. Enjoy!
Notes
- Do not over-knead the dough to ensure proper rise.
- Steam from the towel helps soften the crust after baking.
